Family Discussion[ Discussions | TOC | Search | Post | Reply ] All about me Angela Lynn (nee Jankowski) FleckFrom: afleck45@bcpl.net CommentsMy full name is Angela Lynn Jankowski and I was born in Baltimore, Maryland on December 30, 1958. My mothers name was Annie O'dell (Amos) and dad was Joseph Carl Jankowski. My fathers birthday was April 16, 1927 and he is now deceased and that was on November 14, 1993. He died of a massive heart attack at a party, dancing in the middle of a bunch of ladies. He lived to be 66 years of age and had a good life, although it could have been longer. He was retired from Bethlehem Steel and had 43 years of service working as a crane operator. His retirement lasted for three years before his demise. As a young man, he was enlisted in the service and it was during peacetime but he did get to visit Germany and Coppenhagen. He had pictures of these places and of his Army time. He later was honorably discharged after his tour of duty and went to work in his home town of Edgemere. I think at one time he worked for Air Products and helped make oxygen. He then took at job at the local steel mill which was booming then and this whole area was more or less living on the mill and the local Shipyard. It was wartime now and this area (Baltimore) was making steel that was used for ships, artillery and as structural material. Also, there would be two military installations in the area, that are Fort Howard and Fort Holabird. I am my fathers only offspring as far as I know, but he had three step-daughters whom he loved as much as he loved me. My paternal grandmother was Anne Marie (Jankowski) Pukita. From what I've been told and (I'm not sure of this information), her father and mothers names were Andy and Molly, so I presume Andy was actually Andrew and his last name would have been Jankowski. My grandmother said that her parents came directly from Warsaw, Poland. Anne also had a sister name Tilley. My great-grandmother (Molly) had health problems early on in her life and was in and out of hospitals so my grandmothers' sister Tilley was a fill in raising her. My grandmother only went to the 3rd grade but she taught herself to read and write and could speak Polish, Russian, and Italian. She resided in Baltimore City as a child on Elliott Street but then moved to Ruth Avenue in Edgemere and finally to Oak Road in Penwood Terrace. Penwood Terrace is situated directly behind Foulke's farm in between Edgemere and Fort Howard. My grandmother worked in the fields at Foulke's farm picking vegetables and earned money. The house they lived in was on the water and called a shore home. It was 2 rooms downstairs with a kitchen and a living room and 1 gigantic bedroom upstairs that was the whole length of the house. It had no running water and was heated by a wood stove in the living room that was later converted to a coal stove. There was a big white cooking stove and oven in the kitchen along with a sink but no running water. There was also an icebox or refrigerator but it was the kind that had frost and a tiny freezer. There was a big square white metal table for the kitchen to eat at and work on. Water had to be pumped from the well in the yard next door and carried to the house. Right outside the back door to the house was a pallet that had a washing machine (the kind that looked like a barrel with a wringer). I used to love pulling the clothes through the wringer to get out the water but this was very dangerous and one had to be careful not to get your fingers caught or you might lose them. The clothes were then hung out to dry and a clothes line down in her big yard out back that led to the water. There were buildings all along the right side of her yard that were called shantys and at the bottom of the yard right before the pier was the "little house" where my Aunt Junie once lived. There was a weeping willow at the top of the back yard and at the bottom right by the "little house" was a big old oak tree that had ducks living in the hollow at the bottom of the trunk. Right outside the front door was a little bity yard with a peach tree in it. The rest of the shore was tremendous. We had a pier that led to a little cove and grandmom had a big old wooden boat that had oars and we could row out in the cove or grandmom would take it out to fish. We also fished off of the pier and had minnow traps and live boxes for crabs. Sometimes eels would get caught in the minnow traps. My dad helped me put up boards to the treehouse or platform in the tree too. Grandmom had sunflowers that lined the fence and they were to give seed to the birds so they'd leave the big garden alone. My grandmother Anne had three children and their names were Joseph Carl (my dad), Julia Ann (Junie) and finally Jean Elizabeth(Jeannie). Edgemere is near Fort Howard which is a military installation. That is important because Fort Howard is where I believe John Joseph Fitzgerald was stationed. This would have been my biological grandfather. My father Joseph Jankowski never had the opportunity to meet his biological father but he was raised by a step-father, George Pukita who came straight from Russia. I remember grandpop Pukita. He did not speak English very well and made his ears wiggle. He was always nice to me and I think I used to be a handful because I was told that as a child I climbed onto the little shanty's in the yard and scared him half to death and he chased me and was telling me not to fall and I was running on the roof laughing and kept going until he made me get down. The house they lived in was on the shore and sat behind the farm grandmom worked on. George (my step-grandfather) worked at the nearby steel mill (Bethlehem Steel). My father also worked there and I as well. My father admired George Pukita and often told me that he was as much a father to him as my dad was to me. My father was very good to me and did his best to instill in me good values, honesty, and a hard-work ethic and he set a good example and lived the part as well most of the time. Unfortunately, we did not discuss alot about his family because at that time I think there was such a stigma about illegitimate children that it shamed my father so he did not talk about family much, fearing that his (biological father that had not married my grandmother) would be brought into the discussion. As far as I know my grandmother met my grandfather (Fitzgerald) when he was stationed at Fort Howard. I think he came from New York but don't really know. ???? I know of my grandmothers, sister Tilley had children and they were the Claus family which consisted of Eleanor, Martha, Josephine, John, Joe and Alex. I have met the women but never the men and don't have contact with any of them anymore. The last time I saw Eleanor was quite a few years ago. She is in her sixties I would guess and is married to a Fred Foy. I do know she had 14 children. That is the only information I have on relatives. So, this seems to be about the only things I can provide you information on and it has brought back some wonderful memories trying to recall what I do know. If anyone knows of any more information or would like to email me, please feel free. I saw a little of your site but do not have the time right now to thoroughly research or go through the whole thing. ultramFrom: ultram CommentsI must win this battle.
